A headman of Balapam panchayat in Rallagedda village was axed to death allegedly by cadres of Communist Party of India (Maoist), police said here today.

A group of around 40 Maoist cadres, accompanied by some militia members of Korukonda area committee, went to the village between 11 pm yesterday and 1 am today, dragged Sindri Karla (32) out of his house and allegedly axed him to death, police said.

Karla, who had earlier worked as a militia member, surrendered before the police on March 31, 2012, a senior police officer told PTI, adding Karla had joined the mainstream and also contested panchayat elections held on January 18.

"The Maoists dragged Karla out of his house and killed him with axe before fleeing the spot, after accusing him of being a police informer," he said.

A manhunt has been launched for the Maoists who fled into the nearby forests, the senior police officer said.
