On the basis of intelligence inputs, camps set up by the ultras in Paplur and Teakwada forests were raided by the elite Greyhound Force of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa’s Special Operation Group on Friday night, said Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Anirudh Singh.

The fierce gunbattle that ensued continued for about three hours before the Maoists fled the scene, Singh said, adding that huge quantities of arms and ammunition were seized from the encounter site.

The police believe Maoists have suffered casualties but a clear picture is yet to emerge due to heavy rain and disruption of transport and communication link to the area, he said adding they were waiting for the security personnel to return from the forests.
