Meghalaya police has issued a public advisory alerting people against frauds who are cheating people with the promise of lottery money, ahead of Durga Puja celebrations beginning on Tuesday.

According to the police advisory, they have come across complaints in which unidentified persons are making calls claiming that they have won the lottery from online sales portals like Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal and others and asking people to deposit a certain amount online to get their lottery or special gifts like cars.

"Some online customers have fallen prey to such criminals and lost their money and then they have come to us seeking help. This is just a ploy by fraudsters and criminals to cheat people. We are trying to identify such criminals and nab them. But we request people not to fall prey to such criminals," said the advisory issued by a police officer in Shillong, Meghalaya capital.
