An unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing encounter in Kandi forest of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday.

An army commando was killed and another injured in the operation which was launched in the forest area on Tuesday following information about a group of militants hiding there.

“The body of the slain militant was recovered today morning along with an AK- 47 rifle and other ammunition during the search operation in dense woods of Sadu Ganga in Kandi,” an army official said.

The identity of the slain militant and his group affiliation is being ascertained, he said. The militant group had managed to flee from the area, but the contact was established again on Wednesday. Army commando Sepoy Mukul Meena of 3-Para Regiment was killed while another soldier suffered injuries on Wednesday.

Reports said more troops have been rushed to the area and operation has been extended to nearby forest areas.
