Union Minister Maneka Gandhi has urged Health Minister J P Nadda to bring in strict regulations to check the “alarming trend” of C-sections in India.

She said gynaecologists who carry out Caesarean deliveries just to make money should be “named and shamed”.

“We would probably need multiple methods to attack this problem,” she said. Caesarean, or C-section, refers to the use of surgery to deliver babies.

Hospitals and nursing homes should display how many C-section and normal deliveries they have performed in a month, she suggested.

The minister for women and child development expressed deep concern over the “increasing trend of hospitals forcing expecting mothers” to undergo C-sections.

“I would like all women to protest because a caesarean for a woman is very invasive, and it turns a natural delivery into something that is an unnecessary operation,” she said.
