Environment and Forest Ministry will make green norms more stringent for the industry and strengthen regulations for diesel vehicles in an effort to arrest rising level of pollution.

“Last week, we have made environment norms more stringent for the cement industry. I want to do it in all industries in future. There have to be rules that make the environment norms more stringent. We will go ahead with the rules and ensure 100 per cent compliance,” Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar said at a summit organised by confederation of Indian Industries (CII) here, on Tuesday.

Union minister, however, said the government would be “practical” in its approach and it will consult industry as well as other stakeholders before finalising the rules.

“We contaminate everything”, he said, noting that 80 per cent of the sewage treatment plants set up in various industrial units was “non-functional”.

The Union minister said cooperation of the industry was critical for monitoring, evaluation and implementation of the environmental norms.
