The two states, the CM said, were “in a denial mode to release excess water to Tamil Nadu”.

Speaking after inaugurating Periyar Centre here on Monday, he said: “Unity should not be one-way traffic. It has to be both ways. TN has all resources but it is a water-starved state. Neighbouring states like AP and Karnataka don't give excess water to us”.

He said: “The Centre should at least wake up now and examine these issues minutely and act in a responsible manner to solve these problems. They should take steps quickly. ”

Karunanidhi, who called on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the last day of his three-day visit to the capital, said he demanded early passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha even as his trip was overshadowed by the repeated adjournment in Parliament over demand to sack his party colleague and Union minister A Raja.

It was not clear whether the controversy surrounding the Raja issue over the 2G Spectrum figured during his meetings with the PM and Congress chief. Karunanidhi had on Sunday backed A Raja and virtually ruled out his resignation as demanded by Opposition parties.

The Congress, which leads the UPA, on Monday sought to downplay the Opposition’s demand for resignation of Telecom Minister A Raja over the alleged multi-crore scam in the allocation of 2G spectrum. Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the Opposition’s demand for Telecom Minister’s resignation was not backed by any credible evidence of corruption. Parliament on Monday witnessed uproar over alleged corruption in 2G spectrum allocation by the Ministry of Communication
