“The participation of Union ministers such as Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram on this auspicious occasion establishes how firm our alliance is and how strong our ties are,”  Karunanidhi told a large gathering who thronged the wedding of his grandson Durai Dayanidhi.

Durai, the son of Union Fertiliser Minister M K Alagiri, on Thursday got married to Anusha, daughter of a Chennai-based lawyer.

Precisely a week after AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha offered support to Congress, the marriage seems to have offered a new platform of hope for the DMK president. “This is a marriage function, but we have still utilised this opportunity to convey our unmistakable political intentions,” Karunanidhi said as  Mukherjee was seated to his right and Chidambaram offered floral blessings to the couple in the presence of a beaming Alagiri.

Alagiri’s younger brother and Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin was also seen happily rubbing shoulders with the Maran brothers. Their step-sister Kanimozhi and her mother  Rajathi Ammal preferred to take the first row in the audience.  Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel,  superstar Rajnikanth, actress Kushboo and poetess Tamizhachi Thangapandiyan were also present.

Karunanidhi also ensured Rajnikanth’s continued support to the DMK, albeit subtly, by endorsing the actor’s endearing reference to the large number of sons/daughters and grandchildren in the DMK leader’s family, as “the brave children of the Dravidian Movement.”
