Allaying fears that radiation from mobile towers can have adverse impact on health, Minister of State for Communication Milind Deora informed the Rajya Sabha that a committee has been set up recently to look into the matter.
As per the panel’s advice, India has adopted best practices in reducing the flow of radiation from mobile towers, he said.
The government is also planning to give incentives to operators by allowing them access to carbon credit in the proposed new telecom policy. As part of green telecom initiatives, the government is also looking at ways of using solar panels across the country, Deora added.
“In 2010, the WHO stated that a large number of studies have been conducted over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phone radiation from towers pose a potential risk. Till now, no adverse effect has been established,” Deora said the House.
The minister said the government is concerned about subsidised diesel being used by private and public sector companies for commercial use. A telecom tower consumes around 8,500 litres of diesel a year, he added.
