The Ministry of Defence would document the valour of Indian soldiers and release it online for public consumption, following a suggestion from Arun Jaitley.

“I suggested to the Defence Ministry and am told that they are also moving fast on India's War history. We are one of the few countries that do not have documentation of its war history,” Jaitley, the Information & Broadcasting Minister, said while addressing a function to release reference book India-2015 here.

Jaitley, who held the Defence portfolio until recently, said he realised the need for documentation when he discovered last year while researching that the largest contingent of 12 lakh soldiers during the First World War were from India.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s effort towards the ‘Digital India’ initiative, the I&B Ministry is asking its publication division to make books and other knowledge products available in digital format for greater accessibility.
