Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday stressed on expanding India’s counter-terrorism cooperation with the United States and Canada.
Modi also told US Secretary of State John Kerry and Canadian Minister for Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander that the global community should adopt a “zero-tolerance policy” on terror.
Kerry and Alexander called on Modi on the sidelines of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on Sunday. Earlier, speaking at the conclave's inaugural session, Modi had condemned the recent terror attack in Paris.
He paid tribute to the victims of the terror attack on the office of the French weekly “Charlie Hebdo”, calling upon all nations to launch a determined fight against all manifestations of terrorism.
Kerry, who also addressed the inaugural session, said the world had to pledge that no act of terror would make it give up freedom. “We stand in tribute with the people of France, not just in anger but for the cause of freedom,” he said.
Modi and Kerry also discussed the US President Barack Obama's visit to New Delhi on January 24 to attend the Republic Day ceremony as chief guest. Modi told Kerry the whole of India was keenly waiting with “great enthusiasm” for the visit.
The prime minister during his meeting with the Canadian immigration minister, condemned the recent terror attack on the country's Parliament in Ottawa. He also told Alexander he looked forward to visiting Canada.
Modi also met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the summit. Issues related to climate change, environment and clean energy came up for discussion, and the prime minister highlighted initiatives taken by his government in the clean and renewable energy sectors, said official sources.
