Prime Minister Narendra Modi may take his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe to a tour to his constituency Varanasi when the latter visits in India mid-December.

Abe is expected to visit India for the annual summit with Modi sometime in the middle of next month. Sources said that apart from meeting in New Delhi, the two prime ministers might also join each other for a visit to the holy city of Varanasi.

During his visit to Tokyo in September 2014, Modi briefed Abe on his initiatives like smart cities and renewal of heritage cities, including the city of Varanasi. Abe has expressed Japan’s willingness to support Modi’s endeavours.

Modi’s visit to Tokyo also saw signing of a document to promote partnership city arrangement between the ancient cities of Varanasi and Kyoto.
