There had been no discussion in the BJP on the party's prime ministerial candidate, senior leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said Tuesday as speculation mounts on whether it will choose Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to lead it in the next general elections.

"There is no discussion in party about the PM, and there are many capable candidates including Modi," Naidu told reporters here. His comments come days after party colleague Sushma Swaraj, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, endorsed Modi as a prime ministerial candidate.

"Narendra Modi is capable of becoming the prime minister... he is fit for it," Sushma Swaraj had said in Vadodara.  Modi's candidature has been opposed by certain sections within the party, with Bihar BJP chief C.P. Thakur opposing it openly.
