Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday renewed his primary membership of the BJP for six years by sending an SMS in what the party projected as the digital way of adding to its support base.

Even as Modi said he was impressed by the novel method of reaching out to people to join the BJP, his concern was that the party should emerge as a “diverse” outfit reflecting the diversity of the nation.

“BJP should also come across as a diverse party. People from all strata of society should feel that we have a representative in this vase of flowers,” Modi said at a function to launch the BJP’s first membership drive after the Lok Sabha polls. “There is a perception that politics is filthy. However, that is not true. Had it been filthy, Mahatma Gandhi would never have ventured into it,” he said.

Modi said: “The country’s politics has changed. People are no longer entering politics from social or mass movements.”

BJP chief Amit Shah had said a toll-free number will also be launched and people would be asked to give a missed call, after that they will get their membership number and other details through SMS.
