Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sought country-wide protection of cow progeny and a ban on its slaughter.
“People should press the Central government for enacting a law for the protection of cow progeny and particularly for a ban on ferrying of beef in railways,” Modi said, while speaking at an event at Rangpur in Gandhinagar.
The Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act 2011, imposes complete ban on cow-slaughter, transportation and selling of cow-beef.
It came into force from October last year.
As per the Act those involved in cow-slaughter and other related activities will be subjected to imprisonment of up to seven years as well as a fine of Rs 50,000.
