After writing to the Prime Minister against the Communal Violence Bill, BJP Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi has reached out to other state chief ministers, urging them to deliberate on the Bill, take up the matter with the Centre and oppose it.
He said in a letter that it is important for all Chief Ministers to rise beyond political affiliations and come together to oppose the Bill, which, according to him, “is nothing but a blatant attempt by the Centre to interfere with and intrude upon the powers of elected State Governments.”
Modi stressed that the Bill would polarize the society on religious and linguistic lines and would introduce the idea of differential application of criminal law to citizens based on religious and linguistic identities.
He further added that the Bill would demoralize public savants and even impact how the state government can deal with law and order situations in future.
His counterparts in Madhya Pradesh (Shivraj Singh Chouhan), Maharashtra (Prithviraj Chavan), Manipur (Okram Ibobi Singh), Meghalaya (Mukul Sangma) are among those who received the letter.
On Thursday, Modi wrote to the Prime Minister expressing his strong opposition to the Bill.
“Requested State Govts to rise above political affiliations & together oppose the Bill, which intrudes upon powers of elected State Govts,” Modi tweeted later.
