The accused, Rajratna Nadar, 50, is a mental patient and resides in Virar township with her daughter and husband.
"Rajratna used to get angry every now and then. Her daughter, Almamary, used to take care of her while her husband, Selvaraj, was away at work," Senior Police Inspector Y.R. Bhagwan told IANS.
Selvaraj lodged an FIR late Friday in which he mentioned that his wife not only killed their daughter but also chopped off her head, hands and legs.
"He came to know about the incident when he returned from work Friday night," Bhagwan said.
"Rajratna has been produced in the court and has been remanded to magisterial custody wherein she is undergoing medical examination," he added.
