Amid incidents of airlines not properly treating disabled fliers, the Civil Aviation Ministry on Saturday made fresh proposals to help such passengers.

The initiatives include setting up of towable ramps in airports where ambulift or aerobridge is not available.

The fresh proposals also include training programme for airport and airline staff in dealing with people with disability.

“Airports where ambulift or aerobridge facility is not available, provision of towable ramp should be made by airport operator”, the Ministry said as it decided to amend the relevant Civil Aviation Rules (CAR). At present, there is no such provision in the CAR.

The proposals, unveiled by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, also said that the airport operator should ensure that devices being used to assist a disabled passenger are as per the standards set by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
