“It’s a non-rational and non-scientific study as infections are there everywhere,” Dr Reddy told reporters at a function to launch a new scheme, “Obesity Surgery,” by his hospital. The scheme is to help cure obese patients through latest surgical treatment. Fully endorsing Indian Council of Medical Research Director General V M Katoch’s critique of the Lancet article, in New Delhi on Thursday, Dr Reddy said: “We should patiently wait for the report of the fuller inquiry ordered by Katoch.”
On one of Apollo’s Microbiology researchers being involved in this Lancet study, Dr Reddy said: “We are taking up this issue and a report is being prepared. If it is the case that the article affects medical tourism, then it is motivated,” he said.
Two medical experts from the UK—Dr Abeezar Sarela, University of Leeds, and Dr Torsten Olbers, Imperial College, London, who are part of this new Apollo venture— downplayed the superbug row. They said clinical infection was a “big issue world over.”
