The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday sought reports from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh governments following allegations of police atrocity against farmers and a “fake” encounter respectively.

In its notice to the Madhya Pradesh government, the NHRC has asked the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to submit a report within four weeks on allegations of atrocity against a group of farmers returning after a protest in Tikamgarh.

The media had reported about police assaulting farmers after stripping them down to their underwear, at the Tikamgarh rural police station on October 3. The farmers were returning after a protest against the anti-farmer policies of the government.

“The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, are indicative of violation of human rights of the farmers,” the NHRC said.
