No FIR against Modi for Snoopgate: Gujarat HC

The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday rejected suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma’s plea for direction to lodge an FIR against Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the ‘Snoopgate’ scandal.

The Modi government was rocked by the scandal after two news portals reported about the alleged snooping on a woman by former state home minister Amit Shah at the behest of one ‘Saheb’.

Justice G R Udhvani observed that there are alternative remedies available and asked him to approach the magisterial court. The court said that the petition is not maintainable under Article 226, which contains the provision for filing a petition before the Gujarat High Court.

Sharma had earlier approached the Gandhinagar Police and the State DGP with the plea for registration of an FIR, but they had refused to do so. He had then approached the high court and contended that the police cannot refuse to file an FIR, as per a recent direction of the Supreme Court.
