On the defensive over the death of an 11-year-old girl in Jharkhand due to 'starvation', the Modi government on Friday made it clear that it had not made mandatory the linking of ration cards with Aadhaar for receiving benefits under the food security law.

“We have been saying time and again, there is no order to deny foodgrain to the poor through the PDS for lack of Aadhaar seeding,” Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Ramvilas Paswan said.

Reports said Santoshi Kumari died after starving for four days as her family hadn't got ration for four months.
