Questions have been raised in several quarters whether Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra’s admission about his involvement in betting on IPL matches was not sufficient to book him under the Public Gambling Act.

The Delhi Police, which made the disclosure on Kundra placing bets, decided not to proceed against him, saying that the admission would not hold good in the court. Investigators reportedly claimed that if they started booking people for betting, the number of arrests would shoot up from the present 26 to 2,600.

The Mumbai Police had adopted a different yardstick and arrested Chennai Super Kings “principal” Gurunath Meiyappan and actor Vindoo Dara Singh, mainly for their alleged complicity in betting.

“If what the Delhi Police are saying is correct, then there may be a case of discrimination. One can not adopt different parameters,” said senior advocate S Guru Krishna Kumar.
