Rain-hit northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday limped back to normal life following respite from the relentless downpour in the state.
But the good news may not last longer, as the weather bureau has warned further rains across the state in the next two days due to persisting low pressure area in Bay of Bengal.
The southern districts continued to reel under wet weather as heavy rains continued on Saturday night.
A senior Met Department official said on Sunday evening that the Trough of low at mean sea level now lies over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Tamil Nadu and Comorin area.
"Under this influence heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over south Tamil Nadu -including the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Pudukottai," he said.
Rain would also occur in the state's northern parts such as Karaikal and Puducherry, the official added. Tirunelveli recorded 14 CM rains in the last 24 hours, followed by Nagapattinam with 12 CM. However, rainfall would gradually recede in the next few days.
Fishermen were warned that a strong easterly wind gusting up to 45-55 KMPH would blow along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastline in the next 24 hours.
Several areas of Chennai and neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur remained inundated for nearly a week. District officials rescued many marooned in the flooded areas.
Rail and air services continued without interruption on Sunday. Southern Railway sources said many trains coming from the districts down-south arrived on time.
Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami flagged off 200 additional mobile medical teams to treat people in rain-hit districts and prevent waterborne diseases.
