Odisha govt launches free medicine scheme

Odisha government has launched a free medicine programme that would supply medicines for various diseases including cancer and mental disorders.

Christened “Niramaya”, the scheme, implemented through the newly formed Odisha State Medicine Corporation, is made available to those taking treatment only at state-run health facilities.

State Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak said the scheme, launched in different districts on May 01, will initially be available in medical colleges cum hospitals in Cuttack in coastal Cuttack district, Burla in western Odisha’s Sambalpur district and Berhampur in southern Odisha’s Ganjam district, besides the 30 district headquarter hospitals and Capital Hospital, the biggest run government health centre.

He said the scheme would be further extended to sub-divisional and block level hospitals subsequently. “We hope the scheme help in reducing the medicinal costs of people, particularly those belonging to financially weaker sections” the minister said.
