The decision taken by Indian Railways to conduct online tests for its mega recruitment drive will save around 10 lakh trees, railway officials have said.

The railways, which is in the process of filling 88,000 posts in various categories this year, has decided to end the use of paper for exams.

With 2.38 crore people having submitted their applications and assuming one person uses four A4 size sheets, nearly 10 crore sheets of paper will be needed.

And for producing these 10 crore sheets, 10 lakh trees have to be cut, an official said.

The recruitment is being held for various posts, including that of locomotive pilots, technicians and inspection crew. Around 300 examination centres will be set up around the country.
