Efforts by Opposition parties to cobble up a grand coalition against the BJP is an “opportunistic alliance”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday while projecting the BJP as the only party that is interested in "serving the country."

Addressing party workers from Tamil Nadu through the popular NaMo app, the prime minister accused the Opposition parties of trying “to build their own empire”.

"They want to build their own empire, but we want to empower people. The alliance (against the BJP) is a short-term one being stitched only for the benefits of the respective parties,” Modi said.

Unlike other parties, the BJP leaders and not in politics to divide and rule, but to serve the country in every way. "The upcoming polls are important for the BJP and the country to further our development agenda," he said.

While addressing party workers last week, Modi said NDA is an “article of faith” and not a compulsion for the BJP while reminding “old friends” that the party’s doors are always open for them.

He had utilised the occasion to take pot-shots at Congress for “mismanaging” and “ill-treating” allies.
