A Parliamentary panel has demanded stringent punishment for those involved in making fake organic products that continue to flood markets across the country.

The Committee on Estimates, chaired by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, said more than two dozen complaints of detection of pesticides in consignments of organic food exported from India to destinations in the European Union and the US have also been received.

It said senior government officials had admitted to the committee that the most famous organic products available in the national capital were not organic. National organic production standards disallow the use of synthetic herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides

“... fake organic produce will have far-reaching adverse implications for India’s organic trade, especially international trade,” the committee said.
