A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the final report on cases against the Sri Lankan Navy and fishermen of the island nation for allegedly attacking Indian fishermen and damaging their vessels has been filed in Madras High Court.
According to the petitioner S M Anantha Murugan, the Madurai bench of the high court had already ordered the central government’s cabinet secretary, national security adviser, defence secretary, deputy director-general of operations, coastal security of the Indian Coast Guard and secretary of external affairs to take safety measures to see that Indian fishermen were not subjected to any “atrocities by Sri Lankan Navy”.
The Ocean Patrol Police, Marine Police and Q branch of the state police had registered a total of 253 FIRs against the Sri Lankan Navy and the country’s fishermen till November 2, 2012, for allegedly “murdering and injuring” Indian fishermen and damaging their vessels in Indian waters.
