Nearly 70 passengers and crew members had a close shave when an aircraft of the Alliance Air overshot the runway in the historic temple town of Shirdi in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

The incident took place at 5:30 pm on Monday evening.

The aircraft left the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and during the landing, the plane overshot the runway by 50 metres, however, the pilot brought it to a screeching halt.

The passengers were evacuated to safety.

All the passengers and crew members are safe.

The aircraft is an ATR belonging to the Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India.

Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation are investigating the incident.

The Shirdi airport, that was built by the Maharashtra Aircraft Development Company, was inaugurated on 1 October by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Mandatory checks of the airport are being carried out after the incident.
