Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that a task force will soon be set up for preparation of a “comprehensive” action plan for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympics.

This came at a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by the prime minister as India won just two medals at the Rio Olympics 2016 compared to six in London four years ago.

While India had sent its largest ever contingent to participate in the Rio Olympics, many of whom were initially touted as medal prospects, a low-key return for the nation in the games brought into focus many of the issues and concerns, including inadequate facilities for players for their practice.

“The task force will prepare overall strategy for sports facility, training, selection procedure and other related matters. It will comprise of members who are in-house experts as well as those from outside,” the PMO said.
