A plea has been submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sanction the second phase of the Bangalore Metro in the 2013-14 Union budget.

In a memorandum, former member of the Zonal Railway User’s Consultative Committee of Southern & South Western Railways Prakash Mandoth said that the Karnataka government has cleared the proposal for the 72.1 km second phase and has forwarded it to the Union government.

Phase-1, with a total length of 42.3 km is due for completion by December 2014. The physical progress achieved so far is about 65 per cent, he said.

Noting that the existing mode of public transport has been rendered inadequate, Mandoth said Bangalore, which does not have a mass transport system, needed about 250 km of Metro rail network for the present population.
