Prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the country lacked “quality teachers” as he stressed the need for imparting the right kind of training to teachers so that they could ensure “all-round development” of the student.
“Good education is linked with good teachers...there is a shortage of good teachers in the country,” Modi said while speaking at a function after laying the foundation stone of Inter-University Centre for Teacher's Education at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi.
“Everyone wants good education.....we will have to ponder over as to how to make good teachers...mostly people become teacher when they fail to achieve their desired goal,” the prime minister said evoking laughter from the audience that comprised a large number of teachers.
He suggested that training for teachers could begin right after class XII. “The teacher should know our tradition besides child psychology and should have friendly attitude,” he added.
The prime minister said that the objective of education was not to produce “robots” but to help make a “complete person”. “We can also export teachers if they are good,” he remarked. He also referred to female feticide and said that it was a matter of shame for us and called for “sensitising” the people through the cultural fora.
