A political storm broke out after the Supreme Court granted bail for suspended army officer Shrikant Purohit in the Malegaon blasts case with the BJP terming it as a collapse of the “saffron terror” propped up by the UPA government to counter Islamist terrorism.

The Congress on Monday slammed the BJP for misusing the central agencies and letting off all the accused affiliated to the RSS in the bomb blast cases.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said the Modi government made the central investigating agencies do its bidding.

“There is a pattern of adhocism in the government which is intrinsic to the investigating agencies. It is surprising that this government is unable to find a single officer to head the National Investigation Agency,” Manish Tewari, AICC spokesperson told reporters here.

The former Union minister said the Modi government was not following the Supreme Court observation in the Jain Hawala case that the heads of central investigating agencies should have a fixed tenure.

Tewari pointed out that the bail to Purohit was neither a reflection of his guilt nor innocence as the trial court was yet to deliver its verdict in the
case.

Earlier, Digvijaya Singh had accused the Modi government of giving two service extensions to the NIA director to ensure the acquittal of Purohit and other RSS affiliated functionaries involved in terror-related cases.

“He may now be further rewarded for a suitable post-retirement post,” Singh said referring to the NIA chief.
