The Election Commission was using ballot boxes manufactured by several makers but in 1962, it encountered a problem.
It found out that the “Allwyn” boxes had a mechanical defect which allowed them to be opened without breaking the seal by banging in a particular way.
This couldn’t be rectified and all such boxes used in Andhra Pradesh, Kashmir and Madras were discarded. They were replaced by Godrej boxes.
