For the 1951 elections, it was assessed that 19,05,324 ballot boxes were needed.

In the end, 24,73,850 ballot boxes were purchased. Mysore bought 58,000 and Coorg 1,276 boxes.

1,11,095 ballot boxes made of wood were used in Madras after a manufacturer defaulted in supplying steel ballot boxes.

The then cost of the ballot boxes was Rs 1.22 crore.

In all, 8,16,545 tonne of steel was used to manufacture the ballot boxes.
