Protests continued over theMekedatu dam row in the Cauvery delta region, with farmers bodies staging demonstrations in three towns of the region, demanding that the Central and state governments stop any move for new dams by Karnataka.

Protests were held in this city, Tiruchirapalli and Tiruvarur, police said.In Kumbakonam, 94 CPI(M) and CPI workers were detained when they tried to block the Chennai bound Cholan express, they said.

On March 7, farmers of delta districts had tried to crossover to Mekedatu site from Denkanikottai in Tamil Nadu as a mark of protest, which was thwarted by the police.

On Mar 28, a bandh supported by opposition parties was held in the state, which evoked a mixed response. The ruling AIADMK did not support or oppose the bandh.
