Railways suspend seven for train tragedy

 The railways have suspended seven officials, including two drivers, for the Hubli-Bangalore Hampi Express accident that killed 25 people in Andhra Pradesh.

The May 22 accident at Penukonda station in Anantapur district of South Western Railway also injured 55 people.

An official statement Sunday said the suspended officials included M. Yesu Ratnam, Loco Pilot, G. Balaraju, Assistant Loco Pilot, and V. Vinod Kumar, Loco Inspector.
Ratnam and Balaraju were injured in the accident.

Also suspended were M. Sri Ramulu, Station Master-III, C. Ramanjaneyulu, Traffic Inspector, B.S. Chatrappa, Commercial Inspector, and P. Hanumanthappa, Senior Commercial Clerk.
Railway officials had earlier said that the passenger train rammed into a stationary goods train after the driver overshot a signal.
