Months after Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi put in his papers, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigned on Friday citing “personal reasons”.
A source said Kumar, who took over as solicitor general in June 2014 after the Narendra Modi government came to power, on Friday sent his resignation letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice.
“I have resigned due to personal reasons. I am not being able to give time to my family,” Kumar told a news channel.
Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s name is doing the rounds for the coveted post. Kumar has handled many high-profile cases in his professional career, including representing the late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.
The Supreme Court had engaged him as amicus curiae in several cases, besides he was a lawyer of the Gujarat government as well.In June, after completing three years as the attorney general, Rohatgi told the ministry that he wanted to return to private practice.
