The Centre has asked states to increase the number of policemen in Government Railway Police (GRP) to enhance overall security.

“This is of utmost importance, keeping in view the stress on an increased and safety in Railways,” Minister of State Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy told Deccan Herald.

“In order to keep a check on crimes against women, robbery and other crimes, we need an increased number of policemen. There are incidents of drugging and looting. It can only be controlled through better policing,” said Reddy.

The current strength of GRP is over 36,000 personnel across the country. They are left with major crime-control responsibilities. They have to concentrate on heinous crimes like rape and also have to patrol tracks and investigate cases of sabotage.
