RIP Manmohan Singh | Not having memorial for Manmohan Singh deliberate insult to India's 1st Sikh PM: Jairam Ramesh Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who steered India into the world of financial reforms, breathed his last on Thursday night. The last rites of Singh would be performed at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday with full State honours as the nation united in paying rich tributes to the departed leader at his residence a day after his death. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged PM Modi to have the funeral of Singh at a place where his memorial can be built. The mortals remains of Singh will be kept at the AICC headquarters for an hour from 8.30 am for the people and Congress workers to pay their obeisance. Congress programmes in Belagavi cancelled: DKS

Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D K Shivakumar informed that Gandhi Bharat programmes scheduled on Friday have been canceled in wake of demise of former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said late on Thursday night that the 'Jai Bapu - Jai Bhim - Jai Samvidhan' rally planned for Friday had been cancelled after the demise of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

Speaking to reporters at the Circuit House in Belagavi, Shivakumar said: "We have lost a great leader today who strengthened all sections of the society. The programme planned for tomorrow stands cancelled. Tomorrow is a government holiday and the government has declared a 7-day mourning across the state."

However, the deputy chief minister noted that a mourning programme would be held at the same venue where the Congress had planned to celebrate the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi taking over as the Congress president in 1924.

Shivakumar noted that Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal had already to left to Delhi on a special aircraft.

Noting that most senior Congress leaders would go to Delhi, the deputy chief minister said: "We are speaking to Indigo and are trying to prepone the flight planned for 5 pm tomorrow. Since it's night already, it's tough to organise anything immediately."

Punjab, Haryana leaders condole death of Manmohan Singh

 Political leaders cutting across parties on Thursday condoled the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92.

Singh's death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, where he was admitted in the Emergency ward at 8.06 pm in a critical condition after "sudden loss of consciousness".

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said Manmohan Singh's contribution to the development of the country will always be unforgettable. He said Singh will always be remembered for his simplicity.

"I pray to God to give peace to the departed soul and give strength to the loved ones in this difficult time," Saini posted on X.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described Singh's passing away as "a big loss for the country".

The absence of this great economist who brought India's economy back on track will always be felt by the countrymen, Mann posted on X.

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda described Manmohan Singh as a great economist and pioneer of economic reforms in India.

In a post on X, Hooda said, "I am saddened by the news of the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a great economist of the world, a pioneer of economic reforms in India and one who, through his work, took the country forward on the path of progress and gave it a distinct identity across the world."
