A portion of the road cracked and sank near Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital opposite Central Station, where tunnelling work for the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) was going on.

Passengers of a car caught in the cracked road had a narrow escape after metro rail workers helped them out of the vehicle, while a biker sustained minor injuries passing through the cracked patch, police said.

The accident brought traffic to a standstill on one of the busiest sections of the city. The mishap comes just days after a heavy iron beam on a metro rail construction site fell on a software engineer riding his two-wheeler in the Guindy area in the city.

Since 2012, five people have died and several injured on metro rail construction sites spanning several localities in the city.

Meanwhile, the Chief General Manager (CGM) for Chennai Metro Rail Operations T Archunan said on Tuesday said metro rail operations in the Koyambedu to Alandur section would begin on the first week of July.

Built at a cost of Rs 14,000 crore, Chennai metro rail was originally slated for commissioning in October 2014.
