Miscreants robbed jewellery worth Rs 6 crore from the safe vault of the Bank of India branch in Tiruvallur by using a fake key over the weekend, the police said on Monday.
The incident was reported to the police by branch manager Sekar, who found the safe vault open and all jewellery missing. Sources said only jewellery was stolen and the Rs 25 lakh in cash was intact.
Since the vault was not broken, police suspect the handiwork of some bank employee. “The vault was not broken. It is intact and the miscreants have used fake keys to steal the jewellery,” a police officer said.
The branch is located in the heart of Tiruvallur on the Chennai-Tirupathi national highway. The robbery is suspected to have taken place over the weekend as the branch was closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Tiruvallur Superintendent of Police M R Sibi Chakravarthy visited the branch and conducted inquiries with the staff.
The bank is located opposite a famous supermarket chain and CCTV footages from the supermarket and the bank are being analysed.
