Left delegates met Chief Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi to express their disappointment over the failure of the police to arrest those against whom non-bailable warrants were in operation.
The team, which included AB Bardhan(CPI), Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu(CPM), Abni Roy(RSP) and SP Tiwari (Forward Block), also submitted another memorandum asking for an investigation of paid news published and broadcasted at the behest of Trinamool Congress.
Talking to reporters, senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said: “We pointed out to the Chief Election Commissioner that the administration has failed in controlling the situation in areas like Purba Medinipur and north Bengal. In Purba Mediniapur, the person accused of physically assaulting the Assistant Returning Officer sneaked away from police custody.
In Darjeeling in North Bengal, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Bimal Gurung is issuing threats to GNLF leader Subhas Ghising. Gurung is accused in a criminal case and out on bail,” said Yechury.
Left leaders also alleged that money was distributed to purchase votes. “The information received by us also confirms the allegation. Crisp currency notes were distributed to influence voters.”
