The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed advocate Prashant Bhushan to file a petition seeking contempt action against three lawyers caught on camera bragging that they had beaten JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar in police lock-up for three hours at the Patiala House Court complex.

A bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Abhay Manohar Sapre agreed to consider the plea, saying such allegations were being made for the first time before the court.

Citing a sting operation, Bhushan contended that the three lawyers purportedly claimed that they will bring petrol bombs and were prepared to go to the jail to beat Kumar in his cell. “These bragging and boasting by the lawyers is trampling the rule of law. It’s high time the SC takes suo motu notice of the matter and issue contempt notice against these lawyers,” Bhushan said.
