The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Income Tax Department to inspect the documents seized by the CBI from the premises of Hindalco during its probe into coalgate scam.

The court said the I-T department can inspect the documents for carrying out any bona fide investigation under tax law.

The CBI had earlier denied access to materials to the tax authority saying that the apex court, on May 8, 2013 barred the agency from sharing information with anybody.

The I-T department sought permission from the court to allow one of its officers to go through the documents seized by the CBI while raiding the premises of Hindalco across the country in which unaccounted cash of about Rs 25 crore was recovered.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha clarified that the court’s order would not come in the way of I-T authority.
