The Supreme Court on Monday approved the Centre’s plan to register details of the identity of over 100 crore mobile phone subscribers on the basis of e-KYC within one year.

A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice N V Ramana took on record a submission made by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi that all new mobile connections should be provided through the Aadhaar-based e-KYC.

The court also noted Rohatgi’s contention that more than 90% of mobile phone subscribers were using pre-paid cards, which has to be periodically renewed.

Expressing satisfaction with the plea by the attorney general, the bench disposed of a PIL by NGO Lokniti Foundation saying, “The process for identifying the subscribers and their address should be put in place within one year.”
