The Supreme Court on Friday deferred hearing on a PIL questioning the Centre’s decision to present the Budget on February 1 in view of announcement of polls in five states.

A bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud adjourned the hearing to January 23, saying they would prefer to go through an additional affidavit filed by petitioner-advocate M L Sharma.

Sharma, who was earlier asked to show provisions in law or Constitution to buttress his plea, agreed to argue the matter on Monday. The petitioner contended that the Centre should not present the Budget on February 1 as the Model Code of Conduct is in place.
