Senior advocate Rajiv Dhavan appearing for Goa submitted that the Centre had intervened to reach at an amicable settlement of the crisis pertaining to unilateral decision of Karnataka to build the project. Even senior advocate Fali S Nariman and advocate Anitha Shenoy appearing for Karnataka agreed to the proposal. After the submission, a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said six weeks time was granted to file a status report.
On January 9, 2009, Goa had urged the apex court to issue direction to stop the construction of the project on the ground that Karnataka has been cutting trees in the forest areas without prior permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forest.
On February 20, the court had directed the Centre to look into the CEC report on the project and file a report on the issue.
