The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea seeking electoral reforms, including ban on convicted politicians from contesting polls or hold office in their parties.

A bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice Amitava Roy tagged the petition filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay for consideration along with a pending PIL. The matter is likely to come up for hearing on January 9.

The petitioner, represented by senior advocate Sanjay Hegde, sought direction to bring in electoral reform and to make rules for de-criminalisation and de-communalisation of politics.
